Lazily flipping through the channels on the weekend, we came across 'Special 26' running on a movie channel. The movie had just begun and the ongoing scene was thrilling so we glued to it.
The story is based on a real life heist by Mon Singh on 19th March 1987. A group posed as CBI officers had executed an income tax raid on Thribhuvandas Bhimji Zaveri, Opera House, Mumbai. In the movie, Akshay Kumar leads a group of four men who raid at different locations of the country.
The plot of the movie is excellent. Director Neeraj Pandey ( whose debut film 'A Wednesday' was a huge success) has covered every minute detail possible in the running time of 143 minutes. The story and characters continuously move at an optimum pace to keep you hooked to the screen. Background music and effects are perfect for the chosen theme.
In 'Special 26', the performances of actors is the most remarkable point. It's a power performance by Akshay Kumar, who takes his role with utter ease and confidence. Monoj Bajpai, who is the real CBI in the movie, is as usual outstanding. Anupam Kher is marvelous like he was in Neeraj Pandey's first movie. Performances of other supporting actors and actress Kajal Agarwal are also good.
In this perfect picture, what didn' t really go with me was the social message. Instead of a social message its the anti-social message that the movie promoted. The plot conveniently ended by those con-men running off freely. The worst was it showed the real CBI doing a fool's job. If the movie would have ended with Akshay Kumar getting a job at the CBI (like 'Catch Me If You Can'), it would have been slightly better. After the movie, audience leaves thinking good about the conman Akshay Kumar and his team, who freely roam after cheating the public. The theme must be realistic, but I believe the 'message' conveyed by the movie, if any, was not positive.
It's art- they say. Everything is fair and every expression is important if you are an artist. If you, take the movie as a piece of an art, its a masterpiece. The strength of Akshay Kumar's character and Manoj Bajpai's acting would make you think and praise. If you watch 'Special 26' for pure cinematic orgasm (as one online movie review put it) it is awesome. If you are looking for some social message, like in Neeraj Pandey's first film, well you are watching a wrong movie.
