My childhood favorites

As a child I remember my aunts making beautiful, huge tatting designs. Their creations were usually big enough for letting it hang while they added further to it. Therefore, they used to tie all the completed work with a safety pin. It was an easy way to organize their designs. I used to wonder about the beauty of their creations- how can anybody make something so elegant, delicate, beautiful and complicated so easily!

Similarly knitting and embroidering were also my favorites. My aunts and grandmother used to knit a lot. Knitting came naturally to them, like breathing. They used to knit very professionally. They would make complicated patterns using different colours of wool. They would discuss and mix and match all the known patterns. They made awesome sweaters, scarves, mufflers, socks and shawls. We grew up wearing home made winter-wear most of the times. I used to question if I could do that.

I remember my vacation at an aunt's place at Bhilai. She and my cousin had beautifully done embroidery on all the cushions and table covers placed in their drawing room. They were really neat! I wondered if I can learn that too. In fact she was the first one to give me the primary embroidery lessons. I was dreaming about embroidery all the time!

How can I forget cooking? We had a huge kitchen in the old bungalow at my grandmother's place, which was a place of constant activity. My grandmother used to spend half of her time in the kitchen. I remember her giving tadkas and making chapatis. The important thing to remember was the love with which she served the family members! I wished to do all that.

As I grew up, the professional side of me was encouraged so much by the competition around that I forgot about these childhood fantasies. These were all artistic inclinations which if given proper direction would have created wonders. Now that I am staying home most of the time, all these lost dreams are coming back to me, as if they were never lost.  Time has given me time, so that I can learn whatever I want to, whatever I have missed. So, this blog which consists of thought-full and thought-less expressions would often get posts about my experiments! Experiments of tatting, knitting, embroidery and cooking. Well, many more experiments would be written about! Simply, be prepared to digest them all!
